6 Black-Owned Coffee Shops You Need on Your Radar (Black History Month Edition)

My personal short list for your next “let’s grab coffee” link up.

Hey Sipsters!

I was on a run the other day when it hit me! A LOT of the city’s coolest coffee shops are Black-owned & to be honest, we don’t talk about that enough.

So today I’m spilling the beans on 5 cool black owned coffee shops, I think would be worth a visit.

And, let’s not forget, it is the month of love so, of course, I won’t leave you hanging with out a short list of some really good coffee shops for a quick date, catch up with friends, or a solo moment.

Without further ado, let’s dive into the 9 coffee shops we’re definitely checking out this February.

6 of DC’s Coolest Black-Owned Coffee Spots You’ve Definitely Been Sleeping On, Until Now ☕🔥

  • Other’s Coffee

An Adam’s Morgan STAPLE! Others Coffee not only has really good coffee, their barista/owner is incredible and so kind. They are big on community building and creating a space that fosters growth and creativity. I plan on heading back this week to try out their new blackberry latte!

  • Grounded Cafe

    • Plant store, meets coffee shop, community space! One of the coolest cafes that made it’s mark in Washington DC. Every time I visit I feel like I am instantly at peace. You get hit with this beautiful aroma when you walk through the door, calming music, and space to just exist! They don’t have ice coffee but great lattes and matcha. oh! and Yoga!

  • Warka Coffee

    • An Ethiopian coffee shop located right next to Union Station and a few minutes walk from Judiciary Square. It is a relatively new coffee shop in DC and a beautiful space. From cozy couches to good amount of seating. I enjoyed the cold brew that I had. Warka also grows and roasts their own beans which is INCREDIBLE.

  • Jaliyaa Coffee

    • Located right at the bryant street food hall, Jaliyaa is honestly one of my favorite stops on the metro branch trail during runs and bike rides. They have great coffee and their cold brew is super good! I truly havent had a bad experience there, so if you needed a little pick me up before heading to metro bar, going to the movies, or even on your next run/walk/bike this is the perfect place to support!

  • Llama Bar

    • There has been a wave of more aesthetically cool coffee shops in DC and Llama Bar hit the scene last year making a big impression. Not only do they have coffee but also an EXPANSIVE menu. I’m talking brekkie, snacks, lunch. Not to mention, they also have dj sets during the warmer months! Really a vibe in there, feels like a Miami cafe but in DC.

  • Cool Coffee

The mecca of cozy coffee shops since this place could be akin to an actual home. Would I work here? yes. Would I sit and chat with a friend here? yes. would i just chill and read a book? yes. The space upstairs in this coffee shop just makes you feel like you’re at a friend’s house grabbing some coffee. They do have street parking but its a bus ride or rideshare away.

3 coffee shops romantic enough for a date, chill enough to go alone

Sook DC | Location + Video

  • A cozy, hole-in-the-wall space with a sultry, intimate feel. perfect for a first date. Good music, great drinks at any time of day, and an intimate atmosphere that perfect for a date, or even to recharge your battery

  • La Betty | Location + Video

    • Another coffee/wine bar concept that gives very cozy. If this is a first date it has all your bases covered. There are sweets, actual food options, and a good coffee. So truly you aren’t missing a beat plus the atmosphere isn’t intimidating so conversations flow with ease… hopefully 😉

  • Flor | Location + Video

    • Probably the most hyped coffee shop in DC over the last couple of months. I think it’s because of how cute the space is. You have books, coffee, a light and airy interior design that makes you feel like you are in a small town cafe owned by your friends grandparent! Either way, this place is cute for almost every occasion, but you’d probably have to have the date during the week day… since it’s typically crowded.

And that’s five Black-owned coffee shops in DC that deserve a permanent spot in your rotation. This list is just the start.

I’m currently building out the website where all of these coffee guides (and many more) will live, so you can always find your next good cup.

As always, tag me (@astoldbydomm) if you visit one of these gems, I need to see your recs and reviews!

Coffee Fun Facts: Did you know that Coffee was said to be first discovered in Ethiopia! This discovery ended up being a major shift in their agriculture, making coffee their primary export for centuries. During that time of discovery, coffee started to be grown in Yemen, before becoming more popular in Egypt, Persia, Syria, and Turkey! Which how can we blame them, coffee taste AMAZING! I can’t even begin to image how incredible it would of been to first discover a new drink during that time!! They would turn the beans into a paste and then steep them in water like tea basically vintage drip-coffee!

How often are these Newsletters

No worries, I wont spam you! They will be Biweekly Wednesday Morning! With different coffee shop recommendations from different adventures that you can save with downloadable maps or through your socials. My goal is to share all the great coffee shops so you can create your own adventure or find a nice place to do work in for the week!

How do you rank the coffee shops?

The DOM Score™ is my official ranking system for coffee shops around the world. DOM stands for Drink. Observe. Measure.

Every coffee shop is evaluated using the same intentional framework, because great coffee isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s about what’s in the cup, how the space feels, and whether the experience is actually worth your time.

The full experience, measured intentionally. Menu creativity, service, value for price, and how the coffee shop fits into its location.

Each category contributes to a final DOM Score™ out of 10
